Shirley Washington

January 25, 1954 — August 31, 2025

Shirley Washington, affectionately known as “Shery the Pearl,” was born on January 25, 1954,to the late Will Washington and Ola Belle Washington in Newark, New Jersey. On August 31,2025, after a brief illness, she peacefully transitioned into eternal rest.

Shirley was educated in the Newark public school system and carried with her a lifetime of love, laughter, and unforgettable memories. She was a devoted mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin, and friend—roles she embraced wholeheartedly. Her family was her greatest joy, and she loved deeply and unconditionally.

Known for her infectious laugh and the signature "Washington smile," Shirley had a vibrant personality that left a lasting impression on everyone she met. She found joy in life’s simple pleasures—watching her favorite TV shows, listening to music, and tackling crossword puzzles. But above all, Shirley had a legendary passion for cleaning. She had a system that no one could match and proudly ensured her home - and others- stayed spotless. After cleaning, she would humorously patrol the house to make sure her hard work hadn't been undone.

Shirley spent over a decade in Philadelphia living with her youngest sister and family. There, she remained the heartbeat of the household—keeping things in order and everyone in line. Her stories of growing up in Newark, raising her children, and the adventures she shared with her siblings were a cherished part of her legacy.

A beloved aunt, Shirley held a special place in the hearts of her nieces and nephews. Her nurturing spirit, sharp wit, and unwavering strength touched the lives of many. Shirley was preceded in death by her parents; her beloved grandson, Hassan Washington; her brothers Will Jr. (Pop), Oscar, Willie, Henry, and Nathaniel Washington; and her dear sister, Ola Mae Washington.

She leaves to cherish her memory: her loving daughter, Tonya Washington; four devoted sons, Ronald Davis Jr. (Stacey), Alshereek Washington (Rashidah), Malek A. Washington (Jody), and Rashid R. Washington (Tasha); fifteen grandchildren; one great-grandchild; one sister, Debra W. Harley (Bradley); one brother, Johnny (Rajon) Washington (Carla); and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws, and friends.

Her legacy of love, laughter, and strength will live on in all who knew and loved her. We celebrate her life and honor the beautiful soul that she was. Shirley will be dearly missed but never forgotten.
