Ira E. James Jr., affectionately known as “Big Red,” was born on October 27, 1959, to Ira James Sr. and Annie Louise Freeman Alcindor, both of whom preceded him in death. He entered into eternal rest on December 3, 2025, at the age of 66, after courageously battling an illness for several years.
Although born to Ira Sr. and Annie, Ira was lovingly raised by his stepfather, the late Steven Alcindor, whom he proudly knew as Dad. Steven played a significant role in shaping Ira’s values, character, and the quiet strength he carried throughout his life.
Ira was educated in the New York City school system and graduated from Lafayette High School. After completing his education, he held several jobs before establishing a long and fulfilling career with the New York City Transit Authority. Simultaneously, he worked for the New York City school system, demonstrating dedication, discipline, and a strong work ethic.
Ira valued fitness and healthy living. He was often seen doing pull-ups on the handrails in front of Nobel Drew Ali Plaza. Fitness, which played a role in Ira’s life, led to the establishment of the weight room at the Brownsville Recreation Center. The “BRC” was a second home to Ira. There, he inspired many young people to build inner strength and confidence. After 32 years with NYC Transit and 16 years with the school system, Ira entered a well-earned retirement in 2020. Ira was known for his quiet charisma, humor, loyalty, and patience. He earned deep respect from everyone who knew him. His presence was warm and steady. His kindness left an imprint on countless lives.
His legacy continues through his beloved son, Ira James III, his daughter-in-law Sophia James, and his four beautiful granddaughters: Ijahnae, Saniya, Iyonna, and Savonni.
Ira is survived by his six siblings: Mona Freeman, William McMillan, Ktoya James, Karen Sterling, Rosemary McLaughlin, and Linda Bolling. He is also survived by his aunts: Rosemarie Clarke, Pearly Wilkins, and Stella Holland. He leaves behind a large and loving extended family, including 11 nieces, 7 nephews, 19 great-nieces, 11 great-nephews, 10 great-great-nieces, 9 great-great-nephews, 3 brothers-in-law, 2 nephews-in-law, 1 niece-in-law, a host of cousins, and friends.
During his illness, Ira was blessed to have a devoted and cherished friend, Yvette Veney, who stood faithfully by his side throughout his journey. Ira’s life was a testament to resilience, humility, generosity, and love. His memory will live on in the hearts of his family, friends, and all who were fortunate enough to know him.
