Cecil Copes was born on September 30, 1944 and transitioned surrounded by his family on May 16, 2018. He was predeceased by his parents Walter and Ida Mae Copes and his brother Henry Copes. Cecil was born in his childhood home in Atlantic, VA where he attended the Accomack County School System. He moved to Lakewood, New Jersey in the late 1960’s where he continued to enjoy his passion for softball. He was a player on the SHACK AC traveling team, Hardy Boys, Wine 9 and other local softball teams. Cecil worked for Lakewood Township in the Municipal Building. During his tenure, he held several positions and he retired as a supervisor after 39 years of employment. After retirement, Cecil enjoyed watching sports, going to the local flea markets, reading the newspaper daily and traveling to different countries with his family and friends. Cecil’s family and friends will always cherish the memories that he leaves behind; his sense of humor, frankness (he said exactly what he wanted to say), generosity, infectious smile and laughter. His heart was open to all who came in contact with him. Cecil had a passion for seafood and shooting the breeze with his family, friends and even strangers. His culinary skills on the grill earned him the title as grill master and everyone really enjoyed his homemade soups and beans. Cecil will forever be remembered by his devoted wife: Millicent Brown, Daughters Anita Stokes, Leticia Calhoun, Cecilia Renee’ Taylor (Jonathan), Estelle Anntoinette Smith (James) and son John Brown (Ivelisse); siblings: Alfonzo, Elton, Helen, Shirley, Mitchell, Robert Kerry; and honorary brother George White; hosts of grand and great- grandchildren. Cecil also leaves many nieces, nephews, cousins along with countless family members and friends whom were blessed to have known him.
